5 - L'ARRIVEE AU CAMPEMENT VIKING

Extrait du journal de tournage d'Evan Williams (figurant) : "In todays scene, the Arab caravan arrives in camp. The scout for the caravan has just ridden into view and Halga walks down to see who is here. (...) As Halga reaches the scout, he grabs the scout from his horse and carries him back to the camp under one arm."

Dans le montage final, un seul plan a survécu, qui nous montre le cavalier arabe ouvrant la marche de la caravane (the scout) arriver à l'entrée du campement viking, entrée visiblemment gardée par Halga, qui se tient bien droit, la main sur l'épée. Les deux photos ci-dessous (extraites du kit de presse vidéo du film) montrent le tournage de la scène décrite par Evan Williams. (cf. également l'interview d'Asbjørn Riis, qui interprète Halga dans le film, pour plus de détails sur cette scène)

Toute la séquence du campement viking semble avoir souffert de sévères coupes. Dans le premier montage testé : "Ibn meets a band of Norsemen who are basically just touring around on their Viking yacht, getting drunk and sleeping with a whole bunch of women. Who he attempts to communicate and trade with, as he is supposed to represent his homeland and kinsmen afterall. Even though he actually does a rather bad job of it right from the start, as he cannot speak their tongue and is constantly being disgusted by their Viking ways. As Ibn considers himself to be their superior in every way and makes no point of hiding it, which is where some of the films humor comes from (...). [Hence] some awkward and comical scenes of the two very different groups trying to communicate with one another and Ibn getting more and more repulsed every second." (source : review #1)

Dans un appendice à son journal de tournage, Evan Williams note : "I saw the movie on opening night. It surprises me how much film was shot and not used, many scenes of the Viking village were shot showing every-day life in a Viking summer camp, at least in the background, none of these scenes are in the final release, not even the impressive tent exteriors or the many shots of three Viking longboats pulled up on the beach with stacks and bales of goods being unloaded. (...) The scenes on the day described above [autrement dit : Halga emportant sous son bras le cavalier en tête de caravane] did not make it into the movie, except for about five seconds of a closeup of Messrs. Banderas and Sharif talking in the caravan (...) It is amazing how much effort was expended to construct the Viking village here and not include it in any signifigantly visible way in the final cut. "

Certains dialogues entre Ibn et Melchisidek semblent également avoir été supprimés, comme le laisse supposer Omar Sharif dans les notes de production, qui explique : "Melchisidek provides a very important link between Ibn and the warriors as they first meet. Ibn thinks they are strange and Melchisidek responds, 'That's the way they are, the world is made of all sorts of people.'"

Le score rejeté de Graeme Revell contient 38 secondes supplémentaires correspondant à l'entrée de la caravane dans le campement (track 2), ainsi que 3 morceaux entiers faisant suite à cette arrivée au camp et précédant la scène des festivités funéraires (qui suit directement l'arrivée au camp dans le montage final !) : track 3 (1:26), track 4 (0:47) et track 5 (3:58), soit plus de six minutes de scènes coupées !

Ci-dessous, quelques photos du tournage de l'arrivée au camp (de nombreux plans du drakkar croisé par la caravane arabe n'ont pas été intégrés/retenus dans le montage final; d'après Evan Williams, on assistait également, de façon détaillée, à l'accostage du navire viking et au débarquement des marchandises à terre... - cf. son interview pour plus de détails).
