For THE 13TH WARRIOR, battles were fought off-screen and on.

Once upon a time, there was a writer named Michael Crichton who had a novel named "Jurassic Park" made into a blockbuster mega-movie during the summer of 1993.
Agents from Hollywood clamored to his door asking if there were any other novels he might sell to be made into movies.
Lo and behold, Mr. Crichton did have a few novels. "Airframe", "Sphere", "Congo", and "Eaters of the Dead" all were sold to studios to be made into feature films.
EATERS OF THE DEAD went into production with big names like Antonio Banderas and Omar Sharif starring. John McTiernan, who had directed DIE HARD, DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE, and THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER was attached as the director.
It looked to be another sure fire hit for Disney and Buena Vista and was originally set for an early 1998 release. But soon after, the title was changed from EATERS OF THE DEAD to THE 13TH WARRIOR, and it was pushed to summer of 1998. Test screenings were held and the reviews were mixed. THE 13TH WARRIOR was pushed from a June '98 release to a July '98 release.
Then reports came in that McTiernan left the film as director, and Michael Crichton himself took over the final editing process. Well, THE 13TH WARRIOR was looking to be released at Thanksgiving in 1998, and that holiday came and went, and the film never showed in theaters.
So finally after much hullabaloo, a film based on a Michael Crichton novel starring Antonio Banderas and directed by John McTiernan is coming to a theater near you. August 27, 1999, THE 13TH WARRIOR will be released across the country.
In the film, Antonio Banderas plays an Arab prince kidnapped and forced to join a band of Vikings on a quest to destroy a mythical and mysterious creature.
Will all the delays make this a better or worse film? No one can say until the curtain is raised.
On Wednesday, traders were doubtful. THE 13TH WARRIOR traded down three points to H$32.90. The highest this MovieStock has ever traded is H$35.75, signaling a $12.3 million opening.
Not a blockbuster by any stretch of the imagination, especially for a film that has been rumored to cost over $100 million to make.

Les batailles du 13EME GUERRIER auront fait rage aussi bien à l'écran qu'en coulisses.

Il était une fois un auteur du nom de Michael Crichton dont l'un des romans, "Jurassic Park", fut transformé en méga-blockbuster durant l'été 1993.
Tous les agents d'Hollywood vinrent alors frapper à sa porte pour lui demander s'il n'avait pas par hasard d'autres romans à vendre, susceptibles d'être adaptés au cinéma.
Et il en avait justement quelques-uns dans son sac ! C'est ainsi que "Turbulences", "Sphère", "Congo" et "Les Mangeurs de Morts" furent tous achetés par des studios afin d'en tirer des longs-métrages.
LES MANGEURS DE MORTS entra en production, avec au casting de grands noms tels que Antonio Banderas et Omar Sharif. John McTiernan, le metteur en scène de PIEGE DE CRISTAL, UNE JOURNEE EN ENFER et A LA POURSUITE D'OCTOBRE ROUGE, fut engagé comme réalisateur.
Le succès semblait garanti d'avance pour Disney et Buena Vista. Le film devait sortir en début d'année 1998. Mais, peu après, le titre fut modifié (des MANGEURS DE MORTS au 13EME GUERRIER) et la sortie repoussée en été. Les résultats des premières projections-tests furent mitigés. De juin 1998, la date de sortie passa à juillet 1998.
Puis vinrent des rumeurs selon lesquelles le réalisateur McTiernan avait quitté le plateau, et Michael Crichton repris lui-même le contrôle du montage final. LE 13EME GUERRIER devait alors être distribué pour Thanksgiving 1998 ; le jour férié passa, sans que le film ne pointe le bout de son nez.
Après tout ce remue-ménage, c'est finalement un film réalisé par John McTiernan, d'après un roman de Michael Crichton, avec Antonio Banderas, qui sort dans vos salles. LE 13EME GUERRIER sera distribué dans tout le pays le 27 août 1999.
Antonio Banderas y interprète un prince Arabe enlevé par une bande de Vikings et forcé de se joindre à eux dans leur quête pour aller détruire une créature mythique et mystérieuse.
Tous ces retards auront-ils servi ou desservi le film ? Difficile à dire avant de l'avoir vu.
Mercredi dernier, la méfiance était de mise parmi les traders. LE 13EME GUERRIER, maintenant côté à 32,90 H$, a perdu trois points. Sa plus forte côte était de 35,75 H$, ce qui équivaut à un premier jour d'exploitation à 12,3 millions de $.
Quelle que soit l'étendue de notre imagination, on est bien loin du blockbuster, surtout pour un film qui aurait coûté, dit-on, plus de 100 millions de $.
