John Milius
belongs to a generation of screenwriters who like to make, on the occasion, quick cameo appearances in their films. One had thus already been able to see him as a one-armed machine-guns demonstrator in THE WIND AND THE LION, then as a dealer of marijuana in THE BIG WEDNESDAY. It is thus without surprise that one was to find him in CONAN, THE BARBARIAN, again in a role of merchant. In the making of documentary by Laurent Bouzereau, the director explains why he finally gave up preserving his cameo:

Milius : "I did what no actor would never do: I cut my scene during the editing. Which well proves how much I am not an actor! I had imagined this character who sells skewers of roasted lizards, a kind of McDonald's of the time. [1] It was successful enough, but that did not bring anything to the movie. The Ron Cobb cameo [as a Black Lotus dealer] remained, because the film needed it [narratively]."

The Milius cameo is featured in the extras of the Special Edition DVD, but was not reinstated in the film. However, the very end of the scene still appears in the movie, as it always did, when Subotai points out to Conan (who is treating himself to his freshly bought lizard-on-a-stick): "You do not know since how long this meat was there!"

For the anecdote, let us finally announce that the rather obscure Milius' remark which accompanies this sequence in its audio commentary ("Under the Golden Tusks...") is in fact quite simply the name that the small shop of the skewers merchant was to carry.
