But the ending we see was the only ending "filmed". Milius originally wanted to pick up a few more scenes in the USA after they came back from Europe, Conan rejecting the Princess' offer, then Conan and Subotai riding away into the sunset, with their parting ways (and words) as in the novelization. It's also in the script. This wasn't done though. Valerie Quennessen's lines were cut down to basically nothing at all in the final cut, to an almost useless part. She had a lot more scenes and a lot more lines in the first cut. The Collector's Edition DVD sort of makes it a bit better. Shame she died so young!
