The spear throwing and horned helmet scene (which, very unfortunately, was cut out) was clearly an hommage from Milius to the famous Barry Windsor-Smith cover of the very first issue of Marvel Comics' "Conan the Barbarian" published in october 1970.

In the movie, Conan comes near Thorgrim, who just got impaled, to take a look at him, then he is attacked off-guard by Rexor. A small part of the scene was deleted, in which Conan was finishing Thorgrim off with his sword! Instead, in the final cut, a cutaway shot on Thulsa Doom was awkwardly inserted. Cromulus (him again!) sent us this photo from that scene, taken from the "Cinefantastique" magazine. The caption that goes with it reads:

"THE DEATH MACHINE is tripped by Thorgrim (Sven Ole Thorsen) and impales him on a wooden stake with its powerful spring-like motion. A cllapsible, blood-filled stake provides the gruesome, realistic effect. Conan rushes to the booby trap and finishes Thorgrim with his Atlantean sword."
